How to Install a Car Signal Booster: Step-by-Step Guide

You’re on a road trip and want to double-check the route to your destination, but your data just completely dropped. Or maybe you need to let your guests know you’ll be an hour late after a detour, only to realize there’s no cell service. We've all been there. And no amount of waving your phone around towards the sky will remedy the situation.

That’s why, if you find yourself struggling to maintain a connection while commuting to work, working from secluded areas, or simply exploring the countryside, then a car signal booster is a must-have, not a want. Vehicle signal boosters are powerful devices that help improve in-vehicle cell reception, reducing dropped calls and boosting data speeds, making them an essential tool to stay connected.

Let’s look at how simple it can be to install a mobile signal booster for your car once you’ve gotten your hands on one.

What’s in the Box of a Typical Car Signal Booster

Not all vehicle signal boosters are the same. For example, a booster that works well in a family car may not be ideal for long-haul semi-trucks. However, most kits share common components. Before we get into the step-by-step instructions on how to install your mobile signal booster, here is what typically comes in the box:

typical components included in a vehicle signal booster: 1) Outside Antenna, 2) Amplifier, 3) Inside Antenna, & 4) Power Supply

1) Omnidirectional Outside Antenna

While the name may sound a bit intimidating, this is simply a magnet-mounted antenna that latches onto the exterior of your car. Once in place, it can capture available cellular signals from every direction. Keep in mind that while it strengthens existing signals with 360-degree coverage, it won’t create a signal where there isn’t one.

2) Amplifier

The amplifier is the powerhouse of the entire kit. Once the signal comes in through the antenna, the amplifier is what will do all the heavy lifting. Amplifiers vary, with some supporting a single carrier and others supporting multiple, depending on their make and model.

3) Inside Antenna

The inside antenna rebroadcasts the amplified signal to the devices inside your vehicle. If you're using a cradle-style booster, the antenna is built directly into the cradle, so it may look slightly different depending on the model.

4) Power Supply

And finally, the DC power supply is what keeps the entire system running once plugged in. Some boosters come with a hardwired power supply that connects directly to your vehicle’s ignition instead.

NOTE: Vehicle signal booster kits designed for larger vehicles may come equipped with additional parts.

Step 1: Install the Outside Antenna

Remember how we mentioned that the exterior antenna for mobile signal boosters for cars is usually magnetic-mounted? This makes the first step very easy to do.

Start by mounting the outdoor antenna toward the back of the car to maximize distance with the interior antenna. It must be placed about twelve inches from windows and other antennas to avoid interference. Route the attached coaxial cable inside your vehicle through the side or hatchback door.

Note: Remember to remove the exterior antenna when washing the vehicle to avoid damage.

Step 2: Mount Inside Antenna

With the exterior antenna done, it’s time to move inside the car. Place the interior antenna where it will best serve your devices with the provided Velcro strips. This is typically on the side of a seat or the dashboard. Just be sure to avoid placing it near the airbag compartment.

If you’ve opted for a cradle booster like the weBoost Drive Sleek or SureCall N-Range 2.0 car signal booster, you’ll need to mount it on an air vent. With cradle boosters, your phone must sit directly in the cradle, which promotes stronger connectivity.

NOTE: The weaker the signal, the closer your cellular devices will need to be to the inside antenna.

Step 3: Find the Best Spot for the Amplifier

Now, it’s time to install the amplifier. While it’s one of the larger items in the signal booster kit, it doesn’t need to be mounted anywhere in sight, so it won’t take up much legroom. In fact, it’s best that the amplifier is located in a well-ventilated spot, away from excessive heat, direct sunlight, and moisture. The places that tick off all the items in that list are beneath a seat or within the front console.

Step 4: Connect Antennas to Amplifier

With all of the major components successfully deployed, it’s time to bring it all together. Connect the cable from the outside antenna to the connection labeled ‘outside’ and the inside antenna cable to the connection labeled ‘inside’. After you’ve completed this step, you can then tuck any excess cables out of sight.

Step 5: Connect Power

You’re just one step away from enhanced cellular signal and connectivity on the road. All that’s left to do is connect the power supply to the amplifier and the vehicle’s DC outlet. If you have a car signal booster with a hardwire power supply instead of DC, you’ll need to connect it directly to the ignition. Once powered, some boosters turn on automatically, while others might require you to flip on a power switch.

All done—now your vehicle signal booster setup is complete and you’re ready to hit the road!

NOTE: If you’re installing a cell signal booster in a large truck, boat, or other vehicle, then the instructions mentioned in the step-by-step car booster guide above may vary. How to Verify Your Car Signal Booster Is Working

installed car signal booster with green light on

A green light on the amplifier is a tell-tale sign that your car signal booster is functioning properly. If the light is on but you find yourself wondering if it's actually working, here’s how you can give your signal booster a quick test run:

  • Check your signal strength. Test if the device truly isn’t working by testing your before and after signal strength. See our guide on how to measure signal strength to learn how.
  • Try making a call in a low-signal area. If you previously struggled with poor cell service in a particular spot, test your connection there again to see if the booster makes a difference.
  • Look for indicator light variations. If the amplifier displays different color lights, this may indicate interference between the antennas, preventing optimal performance. To fix this, ensure ample separation (at least five feet) between the exterior and interior antennas and try again.
